By tradition, the Democratic Party believed in the preservation of democracy for all Americans, rich and poor, young and old. Libertarians still hold this belief to be sacred. The Republican Party was founded on the principle that government should have very limited involvement in the personal lives of its' citizenry. The Libertarian Party still believes in this basic principle.

In recent years, the political tracks of these two parties has become twisted; the Democrats, following their basic belief in the preservation of democracy, has championed the causes of thousands of social programs to benefit as many citizens as possible; the creation of these programs has meant the creation of thousands of laws, government regulations, and new taxes to fund the programs. This has angered Republicans, who have always championed spending limitations on social programs, and a limitation on new government regulations.

Of course, this has also made the Republican Party the darlings of corporate America, who want the government to stay out of their business dealings. Is there a better, united approach to cleaning up this two hundred year old mess?

The Libertarian Party was formed twenty five years ago by a group of Democrats and Republicans who were displeased with the direction of government. They advocate protection of individual liberties and democratic rights, and minimal intrusion of the government into the rights of U.S. citizens. Our positions on issues such as education, taxation, gun control, property rights, abortion, and crime are designed to achieve balance without the loss of liberties, while decreasing the control that the government has on you and your family.
